Type species of Amanita series Pantherinae Neville & Poumarat: Amanita pantherina (DC. : Fr.) Krombh.

Comprising those taxa of Amanita sect. Amanita in which clamps are very rare on, or absent from, the bases of basidia, having a friable (although not pulverulent) universal veil that is usually deposited as an ocreate volva on the top of the stipe’s basal bulb at the join of the stipe and its bulb, not having hyphal connections between the universal veil and the pileipellis that persist long beyond the initiation of sporulation in the basidiome, and not bearing a membranous or submembranous limb on the stipe’s bulb.
