Type species: Amanita caesareae (Scop. : Fr.) Pers. [≡Agaricus caesareus Scop. (1801)].

Amanita sect. Caesareae comprises all and only those taxa of subgenus Amanita that

(1) have the basidiome deveoping centrally in the primordium and have a totally elongating (bulbless) stipe;

(2) have an annulus on the stipe; and

(3) have common or relatively common clamp connections at the bases of basidia.

Taxa assigned to this section were considered to belong to section Vaginatae by Corner and Bas (1962).

The section is now considered to contain one species of the former genus Torrendia—the type of that species—A. torrendii.  A world key to the species of section Caesareae is available on this site (here).

The supraspecific subdivisions provided for this section should all be considered provisional (in most cases the names are not published).  The systematics of the section is under study morphologically by RET.  Molecular phylogenetic studies of the section (as many as three or four of them) are under way.  The subdivisions presented at the present time will undoubtedly be subject to extensive revision.
