cap | The cap of Amanita konkanensis is 30 - 63 mm wide, chalky white, plano-convex becoming plane, with an appendiculate and nonstriate margin, extending beyond the end of the gills. The appendiculate material is chalky white and membranous. The volva is membranous, pale hazel, and in random patches. The flesh is 10 - 15 mm thick, white, and unchanging when bruised. |
gills | The gills are free, crowded, unequal, 1.5 - 3.5 mm broad, pointed on the end near the stem, white with a cream tinge. Short gills are present in at least four series. |
stem | The stem is 45 - 70 × 8 - 20 mm, narrowing upward, solid, white, smooth towards the top, floccose towards the base below the ring, with a subnapiform bulb. The ring is in the upper part of the stem, white, faintly striate, pruinose, submembranous but evanescent. Originally described from Maharashtra state, India, and according to the original description, known from a single specimen. This species occurs solitarily in deciduous forests. The authors noted this species could be placed in Amanita subsection Solitaria Bas. On the other hand, we cannot be certain of their placement of this species in stirps Silvicola. According to their description and illustrations, in conflict with their discussion, the bulb is not immarginate, the fruiting body is too small, and the spores are too small. The authors made the idiosyncratic decision to describe the "hyphal system" of the holotype, rather than to describe the contexts of the pileus and stipe. As a consequence, whether or not the stipe is indeed longitudinally acrophysalidic is unknown. the information on the hyphal system is as follows: "thin walled, 75 - 15 μm wide generative hyphae without clamp connections, inflated up to 24 μm [wide] in stipe and pileus." The form of the inflated cells of the universal veil, the lack of yellow exudate when the basidiome is cut, and the universal veil described as both floccose and membranous suggests that if this species is an Amanita it would be placed in subsect. Solitariae Bas. The lack of clamps, further restricts the choices in the keys of (Bas 1969). The authors must have followed this same reasoning because they choose to argue for novelty by demonstrating distinctness of the present species from the sole member of the monotypic stirps Silvicola of Bas. While, the present taxon is imperfectly known, it also seems likely that it might be close to Bas' stirps Straminea, which was defined principally to accommodate the species now known as A. austrostraminea. The latter may share a Gondwanan origin with the present species. In the latter stirps, at least one recent addition from Australia (A. annulalbida) has spore size and shape somewhat comparable to those of the present species: An individual Southeast Asian species described by Bas (1969) that seems very similar to the present species is Amanita centunculus Corner & Bas (stirps Strobiliformis); however, Bas emphasizes the hollow stem of this species which is not present in Amanita konkanensis: New collections of the present species are very much to be desired. | ||||||||
