The pileus of this mushroom is divided into zones, with the center and the area over the marginal striations dark brown to to blackish brown at maturity and the intermediate zone brown. The region of the marginal striations may be quite pallid at first. There is usually no remnant of the volva left on the cap.
stem
The stem lacks an annulus; it often bears dark fibrils and may turn entirely gray in age. The volva is sack-like with an internal limb placed well above the sack's point of attachment to the stem—at about 75 - 80% of the distance from the base of the sack to the sack's highest point.

discussion
Wisconsin material of this species has previously
been called "Amanita sp-WI02" and "A.
sp-GSM07" in these
pages.
In older documents such as draft manuscripts and keys,
RET has incorrectly placed material of this
taxon in one with the temporary code
"Amanita sp. 35" or "Amanita sp-35."
The latter taxon is not presently represented on this
site in detail, but will be added as
Amanita
oldwickensis.
