Amanita insinuans, Baton Rouge, East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana, U.S.A. (RET 685-8) 3. Amanita insinuans, showing annulus-like structure on upper stipe, Baton Rouge, East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana, U.S.A. (RET 685-8) |
odor/taste | Odor and taste have not been reported for this species. |
spores | The spores of A. insinuans measure (9.0-) 9.8 - 13.0 (-15.0) × (6.3-) 6.4 - 8.4 (-9.6) μm and are inamyloid and ellipsoid to elongate (infrequently broadly ellipsoid). The basidia lack basal clamps. |
discussion | To date, this species is only known in association with Pecan (Carya illinoiensis from Baton Rouge, Louisiana. It is the first reported taxon from North America with a weakly structure (but fairly persistent) skirt on its stem. This character has been previously reported on a very few taxa from Africa. So this critter is a rare bird. Like all other known "ringed Ringless Amanitas," this species can be assigned to the provisional [subsection Penetratrices] stirps Strobilaceovolvata.—R. E. Tulloss |

discussion |
This is a species of the
Amanita
penetratrix "group." At the moment it
is assigned to stirps
Strobilaceovolvata. Amanita insinuans is distinguishable from other taxa in the group by a combination of its drab cap, its lack of a pronounced and hard-fleshed umbo, the presence of a partial veil on the stipe, and the size and shape of the spores. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Each spore data set is intended to comprise a set of measurements from a single specimen made by a single observer; and explanations prepared for this site talk about specimen-observer pairs associated with each data set. Combining more data into a single data set is non-optimal because it obscures observer differences (which may be valuable for instructional purposes, for example) and may obscure instances in which a single collection inadvertently contains a mixture of taxa.
