where data is missing or uncertain. Macroscopic characters of fresh material are derived largely from (Pegler and Shah-Smith 1997). The macroscopic description of (Tang et al. 2015) conflicts on a number of points, and these conflicts are addressed in editorial notes. Microscopic characters are derived both from the Pegler and Shah-Smith description and from Tang et al. Again, apparent conflicts are addressed in editorial notes. The Pegler and Shah-Smith description was published approximately two years after the material was collected. The Tang et al description was published 20 years after the original collection. When Tang et al. differ by using part of the description from the protolog (e.g., for color information) we give greater credence in such cases to Pegler and Shah-Smith, the latter of whom was the collector of the material. NOTE: Spore measurements from papers by Z. L. Yang use his "Times New Roman" face for "Q" and "Q'"—respectively, " Tang et al. (2015): Basidiome medium to large. | ||||||||||||

Unlike the "white with brownish gray margin" of Pegler and Shah's description, Tang et al. describe the volva as "the upper half grey-black, the lower half greyish white." Pegler and Shah-Smith report finding hyaline tissue including scattered inflated cells in the volval tissue. They do not describe the hyphae has being pigmented or as having notably frequent septa or as sometimes having walls that would be very thick for an Amanita. The Pegler and Shah-Smith description is compatible with the tissue of the interior of most fleshy, saccate volvas in sections Caesareae and Vaginatae. Apparently some deterioration of the specimen (possibly due in part to attack by a brown, thick-walled hyphomycete) occurred between the review of the material by Pegler and the review of the material by Tang. Occasionally one sees evidence of such foreign tissue on or near surfaces of exsiccata of amanitas.—ed.] | ||||||||||||
