A second spore print in the same packet produced spores of different size-shape according to Reid: 6.5 - 8.75 (-9.0) × 6.0 - 9.0 μm and "mostly ovate or ellipsoid." Clamps are absent at base of basidia. Reid found a second spore print from which he reports nearly globose spores and at least one spore with length shorter than width (possibly a misinterpretation). Gilbert (1940) supplies five drawings of which three are close to being in lateral view and measure 8.5 - 9.8 × 7.0 - 8.5 µm and are subglobose to broadly ellipsoid. |

Originally collected in New South Wales,
Australia. As Reid (1980) suggests, we accept only the information known for the field notes deposited with the type and microscopic anatomy of the type. The habit illustration of Gilbert (1941) conflicts with the field notes and may depict a different fungus. Likewise, much of the original description must be set aside. Wood (1997) apparently misapplies the present name. Wood's species differs from the present one in at least cap color, spore size, and spore shape. For comparison, see A. griselloides D.A. Reid and A. luteolovelata D. A. Reid (formerly considered a variety of the present species).—R.E. Tulloss |

Reid (1980) provided an important analysis of what materials should be taken into consideration with regard to forming a concept of this species. The editors feel that his approach was appropriately conservative and reproduce it here: "A number of collections differing in both color and spore characters were referred by the original authors of the taxon to A. grisella. However, one of these gatherings, 'No. 6. Milson Island, New South Wales, 14.iv.1913' (ADW No. 9318), was designated as the holotype. This is accompanied by minimal field notes which indicate that the pileus was mottled light olive with paler streaks and that the stems were slender, 3 inches long and 1/4 inch wide above. At a later date a further note was added to the effect that the spores were 'spherical to oval 7.5 - 9 μm...'. However, when Gilbert actually published the new taxon ascribing authorship to himself and Cleland he noted that there was a watercolor which he reproduced (Pl. 49), and this formed the basis of the macroscopic description. To the latter he added the microscopic data taken from collection 'No. 6" (see above). Gilbert nevertheless noted that it was not certain that the painting executed on 15.iv.1913 was based on specimens collected on 14.iv.1913. Indeed the painting shows a gracile fungus with a smooth, naked lilac-gray cap and a shortly striate margin; there is no indication of the cap being 'mottled light olive with paler streaks' as noted for the fruit bodies of collection 'No. 6'. It would thus seem prudent to disregard both the painting and the macroscopic data of the original diagnosis in favor of the unambiguous notes of the collector which accompany the holotype, and avoid the strong possibility of a hybrid diagnosis based on two different collections which could well represent two different species." | ||||||||
