The amyloid spores require this species to be placed in subgenus Lepidella. The pileus margin is described as striate, which is highly unusual for the subgenus. In his annotated copy of the protolog, Bas's first recorded thought (later lined out) was that the species must belong in either sect. Validae or Phalloideae; the annulate stipe, striate cap margin, and small subglobose to broadly ellipsoid spores inclinded us in the same direction. However, Bas's notes indicate that he considered the thin, entirely hyphal patch on the pileus to be the most telling factor; and on this basis, he proposed the species might belong in Amanita [sect. Lepidella] subsect. Gymnopodae. For the time being, we have placed the taxon in sect. Lepidella and consider that revision of the type is necessary in hopes of gaining a better understanding of this taxon. The present species was not treated by Wood (1997). | ||||||||

Each spore data set is intended to comprise a set of measurements from a single specimen made by a single observer; and explanations prepared for this site talk about specimen-observer pairs associated with each data set. Combining more data into a single data set is non-optimal because it obscures observer differences (which may be valuable for instructional purposes, for example) and may obscure instances in which a single collection inadvertently contains a mixture of taxa.
